Thurrock companies encouraged to get into football by FA

LOCAL companies are being encouraged to “take it outside” by GetIntoFootball Thurrock Officer Faye Lambert as preparations begin for a brand new Thurrock Seven-a-Side Business League every Wednesday from the 3rd-31st August on the 3G pitch at St Cleres School in Butts Lane, Stanford-le-Hope.

The competition, which will operate throughout the school holidays from 6:30 to 8:30pm each evening, is looking for ten Thurrock business squads to take part in a four-week competition on the all-weather pitch, featuring affiliated referees. It forms part of a wider initiative to raise participation in the area and there could be prizes at stake for the champions.

Teams in the Thurrock area are invited to take part in the contest and, with no registration fee, they’ll only have to stump-up £20 between them per night. The initial intention is to attract sides who will compete in two or three 20-minute games each week, meeting each opponent once across the four meetings, with a spare week at the end in case of unfulfilled fixtures.

“This is an idea I’ve wanted to develop both from my development plan and also from living in the area,” Faye explained. “I’ve seen GetIntoFootball Officers from other counties develop business leagues in their areas so I thought we should give it a try in Essex! If it’s a success then we’ll be looking to take this forward and make it a regular occurrence.”

GetIntoFootball is The FA’s campaign aimed at promoting football development initiatives to all children and parents. Thurrock was selected to benefit from a specific officer in late 2010 for various reasons, including the network of local clubs and strong partnership support from the Council and the League, who are both key partners supporting the project.

Faye added: “The fact this is taking place through the summer means we have a chance to use the fantastic facilities at St Cleres and it provides a flexible midweek format, which will hopefully attract local businesses and participants who are missing their football during the closed season. Companies will be able to network and it opens-up friendly rivalry between them!”
