BELHUS Park Leisure Centre was visited recently by John Regis MBE, when he stopped by after speaking to pupils at Ormiston Park Academy.
John, who is a retired English athlete, mainly competed in the 200 metres during the late 80s and early 90s. He was in the area with the Jamie Baulch Academy. The Academy aims to raise standards in schools, improve the health of the nation as well as to aspire students to greater aspiration. They were visiting Ormiston Park Academy to encourage young people to work hard for the Olympics, being held in London next year.
Members of staff at the Impulse Leisure site were surprised to see the retired sprinter, who has won gold medals in the 200 metres, walking through the centre and posing for photographs with Garry Tapsell, Group Fitness Manager and Ralph Henderson MBE.
Garry Tapsell, Group Fitness Manager for Impulse Leisure, said: “Impulse Leisure and the Jamie Baulch Academy have come together in partnership to raise aspirations and attainment in the young people of Thurrock through sport and physical activity.
“In the coming years, Impulse leisure will be supporting the Academy by offering discounts to all students of every school they visit in the borough. The aim is that this will motivate them to becoming more active, raise standards and ensure that every child has the opportunity to develop and fulfil their sporting potential.”
During John’s visit to Belhus Park Leisure Centre, he was surprised at the amount of facilities on offer at the site, including a fitness suite, studio and a 25m swimming pool.
