Bill Robinson reports from Ship Lane……

By the narrowest of margins Thurrock go through to the third qualifying round with a less than convincing performance giving them a home tie against Arlesey Town.

Both keepers had little to do in a match that promised lots but failed in the final stages to produce clear goal scoring opportunities.

Thurrock opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, the move started deep in their half and with some neat one touch football they moved the ball from Paul Terry to Steve Ferguson whose pass inside to Ben Bowditch who had space to shoot, the bar hit the bar and it was Lee Boylan who was quickest to react and fired home with his left foot from close range.

Thurrock managed to keep a clean sheet up to the break despite the gaps that they left in defence mainly thanks to VCD failing to take advantage with their poor finishing.

H.T. 1-0

The second half looked frenetic with lots of running from both teams but most moves failed and broke down with poor passing.

Alex Osborn replaced Lee Boylan just after the hour and immediately looked dangerous with his energetic runs. On 62 minutes he produced a run and cross giving Ben Bowditch a chance but his shot went high over the bar.

Just five minutes later once again Osborn chased a lost caused but managed to keep the ball in play and set up Glenn Poole who only had the keeper to beat but his shot went wide of the far post.

VCD pushed forward with minutes running out when they won a corner on the right, as the came over it was Michael McKenna who managed to clip the ball over his shoulder and the ball rolled over the crossbar much to the relief of the Thurrock supporters.
