CHAIRMAN Audrey Haines welcomed new members to the September meeting of the Guild, three members of the Guild having reached significant milestones in their lives.
Flowers were presented to Sylvia Wade for her 90th birthday together with a birthday cake which she cut for members to share at the tea break. Eileen Matthews and husband Richard celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary and Eileen was presented with flowers. Joan Slocombe, the Guild’s tea lady for many years, recently celebrated her 80th birthday and she too was presented with flowers. Reports were received from Guild sections and up-to-date details given of future outings and events.
During the August break several members had attended the South Essex Federation Chairman’s At Home. This was a very enjoyable occasion, members having the chance to sample several types of handicraft with a buffet lunch. Two members attended the second birthday celebrations of Chafford Hundred WI, which had been much enjoyed.
The chairman welcomed our speaker Terry Taber whose talk was entitled ‘My life in ladies underwear’. He explained at the start that his talk would not reflect the title and he went on to tell about his life with his parents, his father managing a lingerie business.
He lived over the shop and so had to help out on occasion. Terry told us how he met his wife, a Saturday girl in one of his father’s shops, and how over the years in different parts of England he and his wife had worked in various lingerie shops, also working in the wholesale business and as a rep. His talk was very interesting and humorous too and he was thanked by Sheila Kempster. The competition for the Frilliest or Funniest Undies was won by Audrey Haines and the raffle was drawn.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday, October 26, at 1.30pm at the Methodist Church hall, Hathaway Road, Grays, when the speaker will be Mr Patterson from the Essex Search and Rescue Dogs, the competition a Dog Ornament.
