THE GATEWAY ACADEMY IS set to become the home to the first free school in the borough.
Earlier this year, the school put a bid in to open a 690-place primary school.
Indeed, during his visit to the school in January, education minister Michael Gove told principal Kevin Sadler and his assembled team: “More power to your elbow.”
Mr Gove has subsequently given the green light to the plan.
A Free School is a much more radical and liquid way of teaching but the bottom line is that primary pupils will have access to the expertise and skills of the secondary staff.
This is expected to gain most benefit in the area of literacy and numeracy and should see a narrowing of the gap between primary and secondary.
The school has also been in discussions with a number of primary schools in the area including Chadwell St Mary, Herringham and Lansdowne to see where they could be woven into the educational mosaic.
