THERE will be free Saturday parking across Thurrock in December — that was the unanimous view of the council’s cabinet on Wednesday (9 November) evening.
Deputy Leader, Cllr Val Morris-Cook had highlighted the proposal earlier in the year and after Wednesday’s meeting she said: “We all know that businesses and shops across Thurrock are struggling. This is just a small move that should help.”
She added: “Last week we hosted a breakfast meeting with local businesses to see what ways we can work together for the betterment of Thurrock.
“This move, combined with the Grays Shopping Centre’s plan for two hours’ free weekday parking throughout December, is a great example of how the council and local business can work together for each other and the community at large.
“We are making all council-run car parking in the borough totally free on Saturdays in December — the Centre’s parking is already free at weekends.”
Cllr Morris-Cook said: “It’s reckoned that this will cost the council around 5½ thousand pounds, cheap at half the price if it means our local shops in our local towns will make a little extra money this Christmas.
“We will be checking, but hopefully this will encourage more people to come to the main towns and spend their money on Saturdays as well as Sundays, which are already free.”
