Grays cap a miserable week as they lose to last minute goal

Ryman Div One North

Enfield Town 2 v 1 Grays Athletic

GRAYS will want to forget this week as they have lost nine point as they went down 2-1 to Enfield Town at Donkey Lane.

The miserable week for Grays didn’t get any better when the Blues conceded a penalty in the 2nd minute. Enfield’s Wallace was brought down in the area by keeper Andy Hall who was very lucky to jut receive a yellow. Leon Hope made no mistake from the spot.

Grays response was muted indeed they found it hard to develop any momentum whilst Enfield looked to exploit what looked like a leaden footed Grays defence.

Louis Dennis’ seems to be providing a diminishing return with lots of dancing but only going into a cul-de-sac.

Antony Ryan gained a free kick in the 19th minute when he was fouled just outside the box. It was all set up for Lee Flynn but it went straight into the wall.

Joao Carlos forced a free kick in the 21st minute but Harry Agombar’s cross was well held by the Enfield keeper.

With ex-Blue Dean Pennant bossing the midfield, Grays looked to be struggling.

This reporter had not seen the Harlow and Needham games but it appeared the team had lost some fluency.

Grays had an ambitous shout for a penalty waived away in the 35th minute after Craig Pope went down in the box.

But from nowhere, Grays equalised. Craig Pope stayed up on the right, played a ball across to Antony Ryan who sneaked it through the defence to get the Blues back on track.

Grays had come to life with Harry Agombar very lively. A curled shot whizzed past the Enfield goal whilst some great one touch passing showed that Grays had come to life.

The end of the half was marred by a large brawl which saw Bradley Thomas cautioned and Leon Osei given a yellow card and then a red.

Grays picked up where they left off with their one touch game in the ascendant.

Lee Flynn produced a couple of fine last ditch tackles as Enfield produced a dangerous attack but it was mostly all Grays.

Yellow cards for Mugou and Baker and you got the feeling that Grays could be down to eleven by the end of the game.

Gray started to pour on the pressure with Ryan once again going close from six yards. David Cowley came on to give Grays much needed width with Harry Agombar going up front.

With fifteen minutes to go, Enfield came back into the game with a number of probing attacks.

In the 80th minute, David Cowley cut in from the right and produced a great cross that an Enfield defender nearly headed into his own net.

A minute later,  sub Joe Sweeney had a great chance at the far post but headed it straight at the keeper.

As predicted, Grays had a player sent off when an ill-timed tackle by Bradley Thomas saw him receive a second yellow.

And it got worse as in injury time,  Jon Moore produced a great looping header just inside the area, over Andy Hall to give Enfield all three points.
