Eastleigh 3 v 2 Thurrock
Blue Square Bet South
Bill Robinson reports from the Silverlake Stadium
Thurrock travelled to Eastleigh full of optimism with three new signings making their debut, but after the first forty five minutes it looked like nothing had changed conceding three goals in quick succession, which could have been four if it wasn’t for a fine Craig Holloway penalty save.
But with seven players having played only a couple of games for Thurrock it is a new squad that will need time to bond and develop an understanding. Being rock bottom in the table and now seven points from safety with a difficult fixture list for December its looking like an impossible task.
Once again in the first twenty minutes there was little between the two sides but when Montgomery put the Home side in front on 28 minutes Thurrock’s defence failed to consolidate and gaps appeared in the defence allowing Tsolovos and Brown to add to the score line.
The second half saw Thurrock with a bit more fight and determination, but with the Home side easing off they allowed Thurrock to come forward.
With only 8 minutes remaining debutant full back Nathan Ashton finished off a fine move scoring from inside the penalty area.
Thurrock stepped up a gear with the goal but time was running out fast and with only seconds on the clock Thurrock were awarded a penalty, Jamie Guy stepped up to blast the ball home, the deficit now just one goal but Eastleigh never looked to be in any danger of dropping any points.
At the final whistle it was Thurrock’s ninth defeat in their last ten games leaving coach Lee Goodwin with plenty to think about before next weeks home game against high flying top of the table Woking.
