Council give backing to sex establishment ruling

THURROCK Council agreed its policy regarding “sex establishments” at Wednesday (25 January) evening’s meeting.

Chair of the Licensing Committee, Cllr Mike Stone, said: “Sex establishments have always existed in the form of sex shops and sex cinemas — the new category of sexual entertainment venues was introduced last year.

“Before that sexual entertainment venues were regulated under the licensing Act 2003 under the activity regulated entertainment, performance of dance.

“This document sets out the Licensing Committee’s view on what Thurrock Council’s policy on all matters relating to Sex Establishment Licensing should be.”

He said: “It includes locations that are not considered suitable, how we will consult on applications, how applications and representations will be considered, and the types of conditions that will be attached to licences.”

The document was subject to a 28-day public consultation which sought views of local residents, community groups, existing and future holders of this type of licence, statutory bodies — including the police and social services.

Two responses were received.
