AN ELDERLY MAN was lifted to safety after fire engulfed his third floor Chadwell flat.
Fire crews were called to Gooderman House in Godman Road at Chadwell St Mary at just after 5.30 am on Saturday morning.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus brought a 60-year-old man to safety from the third floor of a high rise block.
He was suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation and crews administered oxygen therapy while waiting for Ambulance Service paramedics to arrive. The man had already left his burning flat – crews found him on a landing.
A joint Police and Fire Service investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the incident, which broke out in the kitchen of the flat though is not thought to be cooking related.
Firefighters used one main jet to extinguish the fire. The incident was dealt with by 07:22 hrs.
Five appliances were sent to the scene as ECFRS’ routine attendance for fires at high rise premises.
