THURROCK Council’s portfolio holder for the environment has welcomed a commitment from the Highways Agency to do something about the litter and debris along the A13 and A1089.

The council and the Highways Agency have been working together well over the last 18 months to ensure operations are in place to keep the A13 and A1089 through Thurrock clean and tidy.

It is not without its challenges – with fly-tipping, waste materials, litter and debris from lorries and motorists, creating the mess that needs regular attention. However, during this winter period, the state of the A13 and A1089 has deteriorated. In a letter from the Highways Agency, dated 29 February, commitment has been given to a high level meeting between the Council and Connect Plus Services, who manage this part of the road network on behalf of the Highways Agency, to resolve the matter.

Cllr Val Morris-Cook said: “The state of the A13 and A1089 has a major effect on people’s perceptions of Thurrock. I have been relentless in my efforts to make sure the Highways Agency keeps the roads it is responsible for clean and tidy, and the council does the same. We have made some excellent improvements over the last year, but during this winter period, the state of the A13 and A1089 has deteriorated and something needs to happen quickly.

“With the Olympics happening on our doorstep this year, the A13 will be on show and I’m determined that we give a great impression of Thurrock to the rest of the world. I’m therefore delighted that the Highways Agency has now agreed to a high level meeting to sort out the current problems so that we can return to the high standards we expect and feel proud about our borough.”
