SERICC make it to No 10 Downing Street!

SHEILA Coates MBE, Director of South Essex Rape and Incest Crisis Centre was invited to a reception to celebrate International Women’s Day to mark efforts to eliminate violence against women and girls at home and abroad.

The PM and Deputy PM gave strong commitments in their speeches to supporting women’s groups who work with the survivors of all forms of violence.

Today, 8th March, celebrations are taking place around the world to mark women’s huge achievements as well as campaigning for women’s true safety and equality.

Here in the UK there is still a long way to go…

Two women a week are killed by a partner or former partner in England and Wales.

The Forced Marriage Unit dealt with 1468 possible cases in 2011 – likely to be the tip of the iceberg.

1 in 3 girls say they experience unwanted sexual contact in school in the UK

Sexist and sexualised images of women are widespread in daily newspapers, music videos, ads and the internet creating a culture in which harassment and abuse flourishes.
