STUDENTS at Hassenbrook Academy spent a morning with the Mayor of Thurrock, Mr Charles Curtis and Councillor James Halden this week discussing cutting edge issues affecting the youth of today.

Kaisha Ellis, Teacher of Humanities at Hassenbrook Academy said, ‘Year 10 citizenship student Jordan Sullivan as a part of his studies recently contacted the Mayor of Thurrock for his opinion on certain topics. Much to Jordan’s surprise he received a personal phone call asking whether the Mayor could visit in person to discuss the various issues in question. With this as a starting point we then arranged for all the students studying citizenship in Year 10 to benefit from this wonderful opportunity. Subject matter was prepared in advance and the Mayor and Councillor were questioned on various topics including knife crime, youth crime, bullying, sustainability and multiculturalism. The morning proved to be a very informative session for everybody involved and we really appreciate the Mayor and Councillor taking the time to visit our Academy.’

After the event, Mayor of Thurrock, Mr Curtis commented on how impressed he was with the students and following the issues discussed, felt that the borough was in safe hands with this future generation. Ex -Hassenbrook student, Councillor Halden added that he was pleased the Peer Mentor Scheme still operated and enjoyed returning to his old school as an elected member to talk to the students.
