Dockers superb as they bring leaders 25-match unbeaten run to an end

Ryman Div One North

Tilbury 3 v 1 Leiston

FOUR GAMES LEFT and still in a play-off position. And now there is daylight between Tilbury in fifth place on 70 points and AFC Sudbury in sixth (66 pts) and Harlow in seventh ( 65 pts).

Leiston came to Chadfields on a 25-match unbeaten run that stretched back to October. They are hard to break down but they are, starting to see the finish line a bit early. Call them champions-elect and Enfield may have something to say about that.

Both sides had chances midway through the half with Emiel Aiken going close, before the dangerous Michael Brothers shot just wide. Tilbury took a fully deserved lead on 27 when Aiken was bundled over in the box by Neil Calver and Alex Read scored from the spot to the keepers left. Leiston suffered a blow just before the break when Calver was sent off for a second offence after tangling up with Steve Good.

Early in the 2nd half Leiston had a good shout for a penalty when the ball hit hand in the box. Tilbury dominated and good build up play from Eljay Worrell and Tom Wraight caused problems for Leiston’s defence. Against the run of play, on the hour Leiston pulled level when Michael Brothers shot from distance and the ball was spilt into the net by the every reliable James Marrable. Within seconds Tilbury had the shout for a penalty when Henty shot only to be blocked by a hand. On 69 Alex Read had a speculative effort from 40 yards that just went over the top for a corner. Just before Tilbury took the lead again Wraight had excellent efforts. The all important goal came with 10 minutes remaining, when substitute Jack West was played in by Conor Mead and fired home left footed into the corner of the net to the delight of the vocal Tilbury support. Leiston with there own vocal support try to spur the team on for an equaliser and had a period despite being down to 10 men, pushed hard for an equaliser. Deep into time added on, Jefford attacked for the visitors and passed only for ball to be intercepted by Sam West who cleared up field and the ball fell to Alex Read on the halfway line on his own unchallenged and ran towards goal and shot passed the on rushing Johnson to secure the 3 points for the Dockers and his 23rd goal of the season.

The result leaves Tilbury in 6th level on points with Grays Athletic who sit in 5th. This coming Monday Tilbury travel to local rivals Great Wakering Rovers to continue there good run against a side languishing towards the bottom of the league, whilst other sides in and around the play off zone all travel.

After the game, a delighted Tilbury manager Paul Vaughan commented “Excellent performance with a great result. Played some good football from start to finish and worthy winners. It was a game we had to win and the boys showed there great team spirit”
