Ward by ward: Orsett

WE thought we would start with an easy one.

When Thurrock Council held its “Let Talk” surgery last year in Orsett primary school. Nobody came. Orsett folk (and as a ward that includes Horndon and Bulphan) are more inclined to make themselves heard when there is a particular issue that vexes them.

Community life continues to flourish. From the many events at Orsett Hall, to the Orsett open day, the street parties organised for the diamond jubilee, the Bulphan community forum, the Bulphan WI, Bulphan in Bloom and the Horndon Feast and Fayre.

We reckon this will be a Conservative hold (Just call it a hunch!). The Tories won by 1082 in 2006; 683 in 2008 and by 1193 in 2010.

This has been the empire of the Revells (Mike and Diane). Diane, former lady mayor is standing down and it is Susan Little who is standing for the first time.

Sue has always been one of those hard-working behind the scenes campaigners. We recall meeting her at the St Margaret’s church polling station last year and Sue seemed friendly and committed.

On her election leaflet, Sue states that: “We need to preserve our green belt from outside pressures.” We don’t know what “outside pressures” mean.

Looking at the decision to build homes in Butts Lane in Stanford-le-Hope, which borders on Sue’s ward (if elected) then the biggest outside pressure at the moment, in Thurrock appears to be secretary of state Eric Pickles. MP for Brentwood and Ongar and soon perhaps……..Orsett.

Come the next election, Orsett could be in a new constituency as there are proposals to move it to the Brentwood and Ongar constituency.

What Sue may be referring to is the Lower Dartford Crossing which will pass right through Orsett on its way to link up to the M11, Stansted and Felixstowe etc.

We are sure it will be an issue that will dominate Orsett life in the years to come.
