Bad day for Blues as they let two goal lead slip

Ryman Div One North

Romford 2 v 2 Grays Ath

GRIM. Very grim. In November,  Grays Ath were coasting along 2-0 away against Leiston with just ten minutes to go, and then they were pegged back to 2-2. Easter, and at a grey Mill Lane, exactly the same thing has happened.

The result has seen Grays pick up only two points from six over the Easter break. They drop to fifth and now need to ensure they do not drop anymore points against Brentwood, Waltham Abbey and Enfield in their last three games.

The first half was a desperate affair. Grays dominated the early part of the game.  Curiously, Hakan had opted for a strike force up front with Harry Agombar joining Jean-Michel Sigere . But for ninety minutes Sigere looked out of his depth.

Romford won the first corner of the game in the 9th minute after a fine fingertip save from Tony Tucker.

Nathan Gordon was ploughing down the right but it seemed to be a lonely furrow as the Grays players seemed somewhat disconnected from each other.

Romford shot over the bar in the 38th minute. A minute later, a Harry Agombar free kick limped weakly past the post.

Grays upped the ante. Nathan Gordon forced a fine save from the keeper. A corner soon after was bundled away. Neat play in the area from Joao Carlos saw a shot hit the side netting.

Grays came out determined that get this game over with and sure enough in the 48th minute Joao Carlos,in the area, threaded the ball through defenders and past the keeper.

Carlos made it 2-0 soon after in the 54th minute after a defensive mix up. It looked like the three points were secure. Craig Pope had a shot that went over the bar and then Grays had a fair shout for a penalty.

Nathan Gordon came off after receiving a knock. Kenny Beaney was subbed perhaps as he was on nine yellow cards.

But that all went in the 81st and 85th minute as Romford got back into the game. To be fair to Romford they never gave up.

Once again, defenders dwelt on the ball and there were fatal hesitations as Romford’s unpaid heroes got a point out of the game.

Hakan will be desperate to get Grant Cooper back and get back on track on Saturday at home versus Brentwood.
