A CANCER patient’s medical records faxed to a complete stranger, millions of others lost, sent to the wrong people, or simply dumped, are among a catalogue of NHS blunders revealed.
Freedom of Information Act requests show that the cancer patient’s details were among 10 faxes sent in error to a member of the public by Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals Foundation Trust reports a newspaper.
In other lapses, more than 100 intensive-care patients’ records in Wolverhampton were found at a bus stop, and 8.3 million records were on a laptop lost in London last May.
Security blunders by the NHS rose from 90 in 2008 to 179 last year.
MP Stephen Dorrell, chair of the Commons Health Select Committee told a reporter: “The data we are talking about is highly sensitive and it needs to be treated with respect.”
