Grays edge nearer the play-offs

GAFC 2 – 0 Brentwood Town

Chris Jones reports

Blues took a huge step to the end of season play-offs with a 2-0 win over Brentwood Town at Rookery Hill on Saturday.
Goals from Joao Carlos and Daniel Charge made it nine matches unbeaten for Hakan Hayrettin’s team, and now just require one win from their last two matches to ensure their play-off place.

The returning Grant Cooper replaced Bradley Thomas at the centre of defence, whilst Harry Agombar dropped to the bench as Blues reverted to two up top with Daniel Charge making his first start since his return to the club.

It was James Bunn who created the opening goal for Carlos in just the fourth minute as he laid the ball across goal for the Portuguese winger to tap in from close range. That goal was Carlos’ eleventh of the season, making him the club’s top scorer ahead of Joe Sweeney.
On the half hour Blues got the second goal through Daniel Charge. The rampaging Carlos broke down the left and delivered an excellent cross from the touchline to the back post where Charge was waiting to head home.

Minutes later Jake Hall and the Brentwood captain Darren Blewitt saw red following an off-the-ball clash. Pending the referee’s report it appears the combative and energetic midfielder will miss the home match with Enfield in two weeks, and possibly any play-off matches.

Charge was unfortunate as he made way for Daniel Bunce following the red card, and it was Bunce who went close shortly before the break with a free kick from distance.
The second half was a much quieter affair with Blues happy with their two goal lead, and Brentwood happy to play out the half as their season comes to a disappointing end.
Grays line-up: Tony Tucker, Craig Pope, Grant Cooper, Junior Baker, Lee Flynn, Nathan Gordon, Jake Hall, Kenny Beaney, Joao Carlos, James Bunn (Paul Olima), Daniel Charge (Daniel Bunce)

Film includes a very honest interview with both managers
