THE GREAT AND THE GOOD of Thurrock turned out on Friday night to celebrate the work of Thurrock mayor, councillor Charles Curtis.
The civic dinner held at the civic hall in Grays was attended by both members of parliament, Jackie Doyle Price and Stephen Metcalfe as well as the leader of Thurrock Council, cllr John Kent as well as a host of representatives, particularly from the voluntary sector.

The mayor made a warm, impassioned speech where he thanked all those who had made his year so enjoyable but in particular the thousands of children who had made it such a special year.

Ah, thats were my money went, to pay for all this, I bet they all had a wonderful time listning to the mayor droning on, no wonder most of them got pissed. Thank god we have not got to listen to his voice much longer.
I have no hesitation in praising Cllr Charles Curtis for the way he has conducted himself during his tenure as Mayor. I think the title “People’s Mayor” suits him well. I now look forward to seeing him “back in harness” working hard for the people of Belhus Ward i.e the people who voted for him, without their votes his year as Mayor would never have happened.
YT Editor, I am not so sure that it was entirely the “Great and the Good” of Thurrock who turned out on the night. When you review the “antics” of some Councillors, Great and Good is hardly appropriate. The “Great and the Good” is an accololade I would bestow on the vast majority of ordinary people who just do what they do, without fuss or fanfare, because they feel they have a responsibility to contribute to the greater good of their fellow man/woman.
P.S. I wonder if Cllr Aaron Kiely found time to attend.
