Former Tory deputy reveals why he is standing as an Independent

FORMER Tory deputy leader of Thurrock Council, Gareth Davies is standing as a independent candidate for the ward of West Thurrock and South Stifford (WTSS).

Since losing the seat in 2008, Gareth has continued to be a key presence in the ward. He sits as the chair of the WTSS community forum and is a passionate campaigner for disability rights.

Scattered amongst the list of candidates and indeed those who have signed their forms are former Conservative MP’s, councillors, members of the party, supporters and helpers.

Former Billericay MP Teresa Gorman is supporting the Orsett UKIP candidate.

Former Thurrock Conservative councillor, Stuart St-Clair-Haslam is standing for UKIP in Stanford West.

Former Thurrock Conservative Council leader, Terry Hipsey is standing for Labour in Stanford West.

Last years Conservative candidate for East Tilbury, Paul Polley is supporting Gareth Davies.

Former Thurrock Councillor for Aveley, John Cowell is supporting the Independent candidate for Aveley, Alan Field.

Former Conservative mayor and councillor for Aveley, Colin Churchman is also supporting Alan Field and even current Tory councillor for Aveley, Amanda Prevost has endorsed Rev Field’s campaign.

Even life long Conservative voter, Terry Piccolo has as one of his signatories, life long Conservative and editor of the Thurrock Enquirer, Neil Speight.

We could go on.

We caught up with Gareth in West Thurrock to ask him why he was standing as an independent and what marks out his campaign from the others.

  1. Very good interview, and he got it absolutely right about the antics at council
meetings yah boo politics and damn the residents of Thurrock.

The only way to make the major parties stop and listen is to hit them where it hurts at the ballot box.Vote Independent it’s the way forward.

  2. solely independent?,,,,,,,,,,,,,,pull the other one gareth, why can’t the HGV traffic go up devonshire rd as it was designed and built for?.you have a bit of a cheek asking for votes around here.

  3. Gareth is a thoroughly decent bloke who is passionate about helping residents. His only failing in 2008 when he lost his seat was that he was too busy helping residents and working to improve the borough that he neglected to spend al his time instead on canvassing, knocking on doors and delivering leaflets. Gareth would make a welcome return to the council chamber.

And rocket1 – if Gareth was still in the Conservative Party he would be overuled by the 4 Chafford Councillors fom campaigning to open Devonshire Road to HGVs as the 4 Councillors at the other end of the road are against it being opened up to HGVs.

As an independent he has the freedom to campaign for his residents without the threat of being gagged by a political party.

Good luck Gareth and if you are unlucky this time keep campaigning and keep standing.

  4. if he is free from being overruled now why does he not support opening up devonshire rd to HGV traffic instead of waffling on about a mythical route through Fiddlers Reach.

  5. SO WHAT YOU ARE SAYING IS GARETH SUPPORTS THE CONSERVATIVE POSITION THAT A SMALL GROUP OF NIMBIES CAN BLOCK A PURPOSE BUILT RELIEF ROAD AND THE RESIDENTS OF SOUTH STIFFORD CAN LIKE IT OR LUMP IT.

  6. rocket1 I can’t speak for Mr Davies – as you appear to reside in his ward perhaps you should direct your comments directly to him. Unless I’m missing something doesn’t he say HGVs should go down Devonshire from 1.40 onwards? Perhaps you as a resident and a voter in his ward you should seek clarification from him as he is one of your candidates
    Do post his reply here.

  7. YOU SEEM TO BE ACTING AS HIS PUBLICITY AGENT,I’M ONLY ASKING A SIMPLE QUESTION,DOES HE SUPPORT THE NEW WEIGHT LIMIT THAT LABOUR ARE ABOUT TO INSTAL ON LONDON RD OR DOES HE STILL SIDE WITH HIS TORY CHUMS ON CHAFFORD HUNDRED.

  8. rocket1 stop shouting you are coming across as a very shouty angry individual.

I have no idea what Mr Davies views are – rather than shouting – perhaps – as you have already indicated you reside in the ward – you should ask Mr Davies directly.

  9. After reading the above comments I decide to contact Gareth.

Oh by the way rocket1, I got Gareth’s number off the the leaflet that was delivered in West Thurrock, South Stifford and Purfleet.

I rang Gareth and asked him if he could clarify his position regarding the weight limit on Devonshire Road. His reply to me was quite simple, “Devonshire Road was built as the Grays Western Bypass. It was purpose built to take HGV traffic away from South Stifford and West Thurrock and there should never have been a weight limit put on there at all.”

    I hope this clarifies things.

  10. Oh dear rocket1, you like some other people on here (other postings) have made yourself look very silly!

  11. how have i made myself look very silly?,on the video interview gareth says nothing about lifting the weight limit on devonshire rd,he just waffles on about a relief rd through the old wouldham works,i don’t remember him fighting against it when he was deputy leader of the conservative group,i do remember him crying crocodile tears at the residents meetings about there being no sign of a relief rd yet, when his party had just put a weight limit on a purpose built relief rd.it proves a leopard can change its spots when it is election time.

  12. I like this Gareth. I loved that piece about “your Govt did this and our Govt did that at Full Council”. Well done, how very true.
