Gable Hall beat St. Clere’s 27 – 18 in a hard fought Essex Cup U13 Final at Thurrock Rugby Club.
St. Clere’s started the stronger team in the first half with the score at half time 13 – 5 in their favour. Gable Hall changed their tactics in the second half and got the strong runners of Will Jameson, Jack Willis, Zack Morris and the ever impressive Alex Darnley on the ball. Will Slaughter was pivotal in making quick decisions as St. Clere’s were punished for some ill discipline and the penalties flowed. He acted quickly to ensure that each offence was capitalised on with several tries coming in the second half for Willis, Jameson and Darnley. Mention should also go to the forwards who scrummaged well in the second half, securing the ball well to set up more Gable Hall attacks.
St. Clere’s rallied in the final minutes making their only score of the second half, but it was too little too late. Ciaran O’Brien collected the trophy as Captain on behalf of the team (pictured).
Well done to all the boys for an outstanding team performance. Special mention should also go to the two Year 11 pupils pictured with the team, Kye Holloway (backs coach) and Dominic McDonald (forwards coach), who have helped to develop the boys rugby this year.
