Labour triumph as they gain overall control of Thurrock Council

THURROCK LABOUR have gained overall control of Thurrock Council in a night of triumph for Labour.

Labour have 25 seats, Conservatives have 21 with two Independents and, in a shock result in Aveley a UKIP councillor.

Labour retained the key seat of Stanford West with Terry Hipsey winning by just 30 votes from the Tories. Next door, Richard Speight took Stanford East by over 270 votes.

There was a small compensation for the Tories as popular Barry Johnson won back Ockendon, a seat he lost. last year.

Up in Aveley, UKIP made a huge breakthrough as Robert Ray beat off the Tories and Independent to win by 47.

There were very disappointing turnouts with a number of seats in the low 20 percents. Both Tilbury and Sout Chafford had turn-outs of 19%.

Lib Dems had a disaster with one candidate only polling 19 votes. However, Claire Jones in Little Thurrock Blackshots polled 280.

Labour now have a two year period of rule in the council.

  1. Congratulations to the Labour councillors who have gained further seats; however it is a hollow victory concidering the extremely low turn out, cannot believe that a lot of the wards had under 20% turn out, this just goes to show that local people are either happy with their lot or are so dissatisfied with local politics and the way the candidates ran their campaigns that they could not be bothered to go out and vote.

So te facts are that Labour have won with a majority vote from a very minority turnout……

  2. Why don’t the Tories just get it over and done with and call a general election. I want to see the Labour party in power with the socialists in power in France and Greece. The end of the Euro will follow and then we can have another general election in a couple of years time when the socialists have bankrupted Europe and we have had to beg the IMF for our money back so we can pay the bills the Labour party have left us with once again. Does anyone remember the days when the basic rate of tax was 33% and the highest rate was 80%.

  3. The only winner last night was apathy, with at least two thirds of the electorate failing to vote it bolsters the overiding impression that politicians be it national or local are totally out of touch with the public,Say one thing when you are campaigning and then suffer bouts of amnesia once elected.

Just seen the ruling Labour clique on the tv celebrating,John Kent at the back taking a low profile whilst publicity hungry Cooke-Morris being very vocal as usual, nothing to crow about given the turnout.

  4. Growler, and replace them with what??? they are all a waste of space IMO they contradict everything they say and stood for…

  5. Well done to the Labour group. The turnout was phenomenally low which indicates that most people in Thurrock were not pleased with any party. I cannot wait for more flats, houses, rubbish, potential building sell offs and bad management which I am sure the Labour group will provide us with in abundance.

  6. The biggest winner by far was ‘None of the Above.’ None of the Party’s can be happy with this result as the turnout was so appallingly low.

  7. Congratulations to the Labour group in Thurrock. No real surprises, the Labour candidate for Ockendon never really stood a chance after last years damage, well done to Barry.
I in Chadwell St Mary voted for Gerald Rice as he seems to do a good job, and he was the only one that bothered to leaflet drop, I never heard from any other candidate at all, very dissapointing!
Lets hope the playground point scoring stops, and TC can move forward to doing what the residents want, not what they think we want!

  8. Where are all the Labour supporters. Surely they should be crowing from the rooftops. I agree with Growler. Down with the Tories and get the socialists in. 3 socialist governments in Europe at the same time should see the end of the Euro for good.Vote Blair,Brown, Harman, Milibrain. Can’t wait.

  9. Reading many of your posts makes me chuckle, you are so obviously an armchair politician, shame you don’t make the effort, by the way you write you would be able to put the world right, if only you have the courage to stand up to be a real VOICE in our community, just spouting off at every lost opportunity for your so obviously beloved RIP OFF TORIES, makes you look sillier with every word written.

Agree with this statement, whoever represents us, hardly has a thought for the people, its all about their own ego’s and rewards.

  12. Big Noise – I am far from an armchair politician and am a believer in if something needs changing, then get out there and change it which is what I have been doing (or attempting to).

I am a Tory, and make no excuses for that. I have no time for a party who struggle with basic maths who have led us up the path to the brink of bankruptcy.

  13. Reading through much of the coverage of the elections in the local media, apart from the comments posted up by the readers, there is scant mention of the overall winner in the contest – NOTA (none of the above). You’d have thought that over 70% of the electorate deciding that none of the political parties was fit for purpose would be a major story… not a chance of it! Rather than tut tutting at the low turnout, it might be an idea to ask those who didn’t vote why they took that decision. Anyway, here’s the view from Thurrock Alternative Media: http://thuraltmedia.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/winner-of-local-elections-isnota.html

  14. I’m not paid to put the world right big noise I’m paid to be a right banker. Sounds like you’ve been doing a lot of chuckling. Hope your wearing your incontinence knickers. We’re all entitled to our view. you obviously like to think you’re a cut above the rest. Keep on chuckling.

  15. Excellent article on the NOTA vote which highlights the total contempt which these elected politicians have for the electorate claiming they have a mandate to rule on the basis of a measly 27% turn out. They really do think we are devoid of intelligence and come out with these utterly ludicrous statements.

  16. It seems that the school gates have opened after the latest local elections, Novoice when he says he isnt paid to be to put the world to rights, because he is paid to be a right Banker!, and is obviously obcessed with incontinent voters who laugh in this article, take a look at, he looks like his about to be shot?, with the very sad turn out no party can really say they won this election in Thurrock, it just means that we have to put up with Labour for another 4 years (God help us all), the Tory party are a bloody disgrace running around with their tails between the legs blaming everybody else for there down fall, still nothing new there then, as for the other parties who couldnt bother to put leaflets throught about 90% of the homes in Thurrock, you got what you deserved because nobody knew who or what you were standing for, so how could they vote for you, I just feel that the ordinary person in the street, feels completely defeated they have lost all hope, they are over taxed and pay far to much to the Tory government, to prop up there weekly mistakes, and when they caught out they blame, the old labour government, I think some it up months ago, non of the parties are fit for purpose, and shopuld let the people who write these blogs run the country, then we would see who’s right and who’s wrong, once and for all..
