  1. Well done to a very hard working young man.whom I’m sure will go on to make an excellent councillor for this ward

  2. I’m sure he isn’t going to nick any bottles of wine or abuse pub landladies like his previous councillor for Stanford East.

  3. Ed – Like it or not, Danny was a brilliant councillor who was well liked by residents. He made a mistake, moved on, and supported this year’s Conservative candidate.

  4. So could you please tell me Abbie Bloogge
Why did only poor Eddie carry the can & have to resign

  5. Nicklen was arrogant , self opinionated , and bought disgrace on the post of Councillor with his behavior over the “winegate” saga. The people of Stanford East and Thurrock as a whole are better off without him.
And by the way Abbie how did your boyfriend Ben Gadsby really feel about losing. He must have been gutted at the lack of support he got from the Tories. On more than one occasion he was seen walking round the town alone knocking on doors. Although i suppose he is used to being a loser by now.

  6. Red Rebel, I felt I was very well supported. Unsurprisingly, as a new candidate, I put in more hours than anyone else knocking on doors. I always think it’s sad when candidates aren’t prepared to go out without constant nannying from someone more senior.

I regret to inform you that on the doorsteps Danny was highly regarded and will be missed by many. But you wouldn’t know that, as you are just an armchair pundit, slinging mud, and hiding behind a soubriquet. I may have lost an election, but I know which of us is the biggest loser.

  7. Well , well as Mr Coxshall lifted the ban on the Blue Boys being allowed to write on Your Thurrock or are you being a naughty boy Ben. And by the way i was more involved in this campaign than you will ever know but unfortunately due to personal reasons i cannot publish my real name.

  8. Now then, now then…This is all getting a bit silly. Ben and I had no problems on the campaign trail and these slanging matches on YT are deeply depressing…

Danny “Marmite” Nicklen is one of those characters who you either love or hate. I’m not his wildest fan and perhaps sometimes his impression of how much he was known and liked in Stanford overestimated things (at least as far as my experience goes on the doorstep) was but he was a hard-working councillor, just one who I happened to disagree with on almost everything.

Ben fought a good campaign in tough conditions and I’m sure he’ll be back fighting in 2014 for attempt number four somewhere in the Borough. A man who uses the word soubriquet in the YT comment pages surely can’t be kept down by mere electoral defeat…

  9. Red Rebel
Please tell me if you are able as Mr doesn’t seem willing to.
Why was it that only Poor Eddie Hardiman had to stand down if there was infant 3 cllrs involved, was it not the normal case of the lame duck taking the punishment for all.

  10. Dont really know why that is sallyb but as you saw last Thursday Eddie got beat and Dannys whole hearted support of young Gadsbys campaign seemed to be the kiss of death. And the third Amigo is about to go over the top in a suicidal leadership bid so we hear.
    The curse of Canvey??

  11. Red Rebel, I have been commenting regularly on YT before and during the election. I do hope your “personal reasons” don’t keep you hidden from public view forever. I assume you don’t mean “I am an elected official but I want to keep my mudslinging hidden from public view”…

Richard, I actually found you and your team quite nice when I got to meet you. When I met Vicky last year in West Thurrock I don’t think she was especially pleased to see me but you and I had a good little chat. I suspect we will have differing views on how the people of Stanford view Danny, if only because you probably spent most of your time talking to Labourites whereas I spent mine talking to Tories! 😉

Good job you said you disagreed with “almost” everything… I’m sure you don’t oppose things like the Veteran’s charter…

Best of luck for your 4 years, hopefully be joining you after 2 of them!

  12. Sounds like your after Phil Andersons seat then Ben. Thought he was up in 2 years or is there something your not telling us. And no i am not an elected official at the moment but you never know .

  13. Before I start a rumour that I’m gunning for the leader’s seat, can I just clarify that I hope I will join Cllr Speight in the chamber, not necessarily in the same ward!!

  14. Sally B – It was not only Eddie who got the short end of the stick. Danny had to give up a position he held prior. Eddie was not forced into resignation either, as far as I am aware. He made a choice to let the settle dust, and this was a very sensible move in my opinion.

Red Rebel – Yes, Ben did lose this election, he fought a tough seat and did well. However, at least Ben is not smug and moronic, spouting misleading statements. Both Phil Anderson and Danny were heavily involved in his campaign. He knocked on doors by himself because he is dedicated and will not use the excuse of not having anyone to go with like many other candidates. On the polling day campaign, there were seven people in the room, at least. You are a little rebel, aren’t you?

Many thanks for answering my question.
However I don’t see how any body than Eddie suffered.by resigning Eddie did the correct thing,he also however admitted his guilt something that neither Nickland or Holden were man enough to do.
Holden may think he slipped under the radar yet he was as guilty as the other two,yet I will say again it was only Eddie who stood up to be counted.

  16. Sally B – No problem! I think the humiliation was punishment enough. I do think that the landlady said Holden did nothing wrong, though it was a while since I watched the video! I think Danny has redeemed himself, personally.

  17. Abbie blogger
    Holden was guilty by association.
Although I’m one of those residents that feel Eddie was wrong to stand,I do feel a certain amount of sorrow for him.
He always comes across as the town fool, yet good hearted with it.
I feel yet again the Tories made a fool of him. After all he was the 3rd candidate to be fielded in this ward by the Tories.all of which ended up back firing on them. Will they never learn by mistakes .i think not at least all the time they have the poison that is Coxshall

  18. Hmmm…not sure that makes him guilty. I think I agree with the landlady, who, let’s face it, knows exactly what happened.

I don’t know Eddie personally but he appears to be a very nice man, as I think you are alluding to. I don’t think the Tories want to make a fool of anybody but politics is a very strategic game…

  19. Congratulations Richard Speight and commiserations to Ben Gadsby. At least your Ward got one of the “better” turnouts. Richard are you implying that “Your Thurrock” is a platform for the less educated whose vocabulary is limited to simple four letter words and that you are a “cut” above us? It may surprise you to learn that, in addition to yourself and Ben, most contributors to “YT” are equally capable of using words such as “sobriquet” and unlike both of you can spell it correctly.

  20. Peter – I think Richard is being very decent to his competitor by complimenting his intelligence, implying that his loss won’t keep him down. Let’s stop picking arguments out of thin air.

Both spellings are in fact correct. Soubriquet/Sobriquet was popularised in America, and the addition of the ‘u’ is a semantic change when the term became popular in Britain. A similar example would be color/colour

  21. I do not know the facts of what happend & dont beleive the truth will ever out.therfore can only go on all i have read in the papers & on here, yet.
He was there at the function,?
he was there when wine was taken with out permission. ?
He was there in tha car,?
he was there when they went to pub threatening the land lady?
Tell me did he once try to stop them no.?
    He kept quite
Also remember he was there at offical function uninvited.
Now please explain why only Eddie went? Scape goat comes to mind
Yet I do know that Eddie was 3rd choice which I find an insult to him. He did make mistakes & should never been asked to restand in that seat. If the Tories valued his loyalty as they should of. Why not offer him another seat the other side of the borough? After all the poor old chap has worked very hard for all of the Tories.did we not read that on some occasions he was only one that took the time to walk the streets with JDP during her Election.?

  22. Editor’s Note

We will be closing comments at mid-night on the bank holiday as we feel the discourse may need to move on to the present and future of Thurrock etc.

  23. Oh Michael I was enjoying the bun fight 🙁

Richard is one of the more propitious new Councillors who has shown himself to be very magnanimous to his vanquished opponents despite the apocryphal allegations made on certain other websites about him.
