Thurrock sea cadets sail day and night to win 24-hour regatta

TWO teams of 12 Thurrock cadets set off to the Welsh Harp Reservoir in North London to take part in the London area 24-hour sailing regatta.

The cadets only came ashore to eat a hot cooked meal and use toilet facilities.

The teams were in first and second position by the end of the first lap and then they held their lead for the rest of the race in a boat 3.5m long and 1.5m wide.

This is an annual competition which hosted by the London Area Sea Cadets.

Thurrock are the old hands at this regatta nowadays having brought the title back to borough for three out of the last four years. The crews had to sail a set course for the duration of the race day and night for the 24 hour duration.

By the end they the very exhausted crews finished in 1st and 2nd place

The cadets got sponsorship for the race to raise money to help fund a new minibus and although all the sponsorship has not been collected as yet so far they have managed to raise well over £700.00 so far.

Commanding Officer Sub Lieutenant (SCC) Russ Calver RNR said ‘I am very proud of both teams who took part the sailors at Thurrock are setting the standard in dinghy sailing in which everyone else wants to follow’
