Planning to be the best

MEMBERS of Thurrock Council’s planning committee were told the planning department was among the best in the country when it comes to determining applications in good time.

A report to Thursday (31 May) evening’s meeting of the planning committee ― the first since the council regained full planning powers ― explained: “Monitoring the speed of determining planning applications forms a central part of the government’s approach to ensuring excellence in customer service.”

During the last financial year (2011/12, Thurrock received a total of 1,218 planning applications, 87.5 per cent of the “Major” applications were determined within 13 weeks; 90.9 per cent of “Minor” applications were determined with within eight weeks and 97.8 per cent of “Others” were completed within eight weeks.

Members were told: “Overall, this level performance puts the council seventh in the country out of 339 authorities and equates to a top two per cent position.”

Speaking afterwards, Cllr Terry Hipsey, Thurrock’s chair of planning, said: “I’d like to pass on my thanks to the young team who have done such a fine job. The hard work that goes on behind the scenes to achieve these results is never scene.

“But by resolving these applications quickly we make life so much easier and simpler for our residents.”
