VOTER registration forms will soon be dropping through letterboxes across Thurrock and people are being urged to respond as soon as possible.

Although no council elections are scheduled for 2013 in Thurrock, there will be a poll across England and Wales on 15 November this year for police and crime commissioners who will be accountable for how crime is tackled in their police force areas.

Cllr Phil Smith, Thurrock Council’s portfolio holder for legal services – including elections – said: “Registering to vote is very simple.

“All you have to do is update the annual canvass form which drops through your letterbox with any changes to the details of people in your household who are eligible and return it as soon as possible.”

He added: “There are other ways to inform the council about those eligible to vote if things have not changed – on the internet and by telephone, but we encourage households to respond early to avoid the need and expense of sending reminder forms.

“The council has a duty to collect this information every year, and chasing up forms that have not been filled in costs the council tax-payer money; money we would rather spend elsewhere.”

Thurrock Council’s election team will be sending forms to households across the borough over the coming weeks to compile the electoral register. Due to the November election this is much earlier than usual so please look out for and complete the forms.

If you do not receive your form you can contact your Electoral Registration Officer on 01375 652816.

The electoral registration form gives an option to have details excluded from the edited register and you can now register to permanently opt out of the edited register. This means details cannot be bought by individuals and commercial organisations. Additional information on the edited register is included with your canvass form.
