THURROCK’S “Moment to Shine” is just days away as the Olympic Torch Relay makes its way through the country arriving in Grays on Friday July 6th and in order for the event to run as smoothly and safely possible it is essential that all residents and businesses in Thurrock plan accordingly.
Road Closures
To ensure the safety and enjoyment of the event the route will be closed from 2pm – except the stretch along Hogg Lane which will close for a short period of time when the Torch passes through. All roads will re-open again as soon as it is safe to do so.
Similarly, Southend Road will be closed in both directions, for the duration of the parade and will be re-opened as soon as it is safe to do so. Palmers Avenue, Orsett Road and London Road (by Morrisons) will be closed to all traffic between 3.00pm and 6.00pm.
Alternative routes into and out of Grays should be used, as shown on the attached map. Roads are likely to be busy so wherever possible use public transport
The bus lane on Crown Road will be open to all traffic to provide a direct alternative route into and out of Grays.
Parking
For the safety, parking and loading, will be prohibited along the entire route of the Olympic torch relay on 6th July 2012. This will mean that residents and visitors should find alternative places to park on the day of the event, such as in side roads adjoining the route, where this is permitted, and in the car parks in and around Grays town centre.
Thurrock Council has been communicating with businesses affected by the loading prohibition on the route to allow them time to arrange for their deliveries/collections to be made on alternative days.
Public Transport
Trains will be operating as normal on 6th July.
Local bus services will be on diversion from Grays Bus Station via Hogg Lane, Lodge Lane, and Eastwards from Lodge Lane, Hogg Lane, (except when the south side of Lodge Lane is closed between Blackshots roundabout and Southend Road then the diversion will be Blackshots Lane, Long Lane, and Hogg Lane)
Cllr Andy Smith, Thurrock’s portfolio holder for Highways & Transportation said: “We understand that the road closures and diversions of this event will cause disruption to the day to day life of Grays but for the majority of us this really is a moment to treasure. I urge all Thurrock’s residents and businesses to be flexible and plan ahead for this once in a lifetime experience”.
