Chafford Hundred WI: June report

Chafford Hundred WI

Yet another busy month for the ladies of Chafford Hundred WI. Our June meeting was chaired by President, Janet King, who welcomed 29 Members and three visitors. The evening was spent indulging in a rather “naughty but nice” cream tea served by the members of our Committee. To maintain the momentum of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Lynne Howe provided a quiz based on questions about the Royal Family and our resident brain of Britain, Madeleine Kittle, proved to be the clear winner.

Having arrived at our meeting armed with a large bag of wool and knitting needles, Suzanne Day, distributed these amongst our ladies and whilst we all set to work knitting squares, our Vice President, Maureen Bamford told us about Christian Hope International from Romford to Rwanda. Christian Hope International was set up in 1994 following the genocide in Rwanda. St Peters Church in Harold Wood formed a small group of local people to offer assistance. One of the many things they did, and are in fact still doing, was to ask people to knit vests for new born and premature babies and also to knit or crochet small blankets. Through her own church, St Peter & St Pauls, Grays, Maureen has been involved in coordinating an appeal for this project and felt that our ladies would like to take part in the appeal. So ladies keep those needles clicking!!

The culmination of our month came with our Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Fete which was held on Saturday, June 16th in partnership with All Saints Church, Chafford Hundred. Members of our committee had worked very hard over the past few months planning this event and despite the awful weather we had been experiencing, on the day albeit very windy, the weather was kind to us. Thanks to the outstanding support of the ladies of Chafford Hundred WI, who had been busy growing plants, making jam, baking scrumptious cakes, collecting books and items for our tombola we had an array of stalls and were blessed with a continual flow of visitors, including local MP, Jackie Doyle-Price. Thank you to everyone who supported this event.

Looking forward in our WI calendar we have outings planned to RHS Wisley in July and Buckingham Palace in August and, of course, we will be celebrating our 3rd birthday in September.

Our next meeting takes place at 7.00pm on Thursday, July 12th at The Beacon Centre, All Saints Church, Drake Road, Chafford Hundred and the theme for the evening will be “My Treasured Possession”.
