Inspired by Team GB then get to St Clere’s

THURROCK youngsters inspired by Team GB’s football teams at London 2012 have the chance to take part in their own free Olympic Six-a-Side Tournament at St Clere’s School in Stanford-le-Hope in August as GetIntoFootball Officer Faye Lambert continues to encourage new players into the game.

The 3G all-weather pitch at the Butts Lane venue is booked on Thursday 9th August for Under 15s and 16s, as well as on Friday 10th for anyone aged between 16 and 21. Faye hopes that the excitement generated from the opening ceremony, as well as the first weekend of events and extensive publicity from the games, will encourage Thurrock youths to make use of their time off from college or further education to get involved in physical activity.

She said: “We’ve themed this around the Olympics as it’s the first time Team GB have taken part in the football since 1960. Last year we staged Champions League and World Cup tournaments at Tilbury, which brought out a large number of young people. St Clere’s has excellent facilities and we’ll try to encourage any new players to carry on playing after the event by highlighting access to club links, Mars Just Play centres and Futsal leagues in the area.”

To take part in the 15s and 16s tournament on the Thursday you must be aged 14 or 15 by 1st September 2012, while the Friday event is open to anyone who is 16 by 9th August 2012 but hasn’t achieved the age of 21 by 1st September 2012. The match times will depend on the number of teams entering the competitions.

GetIntoFootball is The FA’s campaign aimed at promoting development initiatives to children and parents. Thurrock was selected to benefit from a specific officer in late 2010 for various reasons, including the network of local clubs and strong partnership support from Thurrock Council and the Thurrock Association Sunday League, who are both key partners.
