GCSE’S 2012: Harris Academy Chafford: Top of the League for the third year running!

FOR THE THIRD year running, Harris Academy (Chafford Hundred) has come top of the league in the GCSE exam results.

The school gained 85% for students gaining 5 or more GCSE’s at A* to C.

It is no longer about the remarkable rise; it is about the journey through the educational stratosphere.

The school has also achieved 90% at A to C in English and Maths which is quite remarkable considering the uproar around the country.

YT spoke to Mr Tomlinson and Mrs Graham as well as the students who paid tribute to the staff.

What is also remarkable is the number of students looking forward to entering the sixth form. Last year, there were sixty or seventy (the number rose to hear a hundred) but they were a bit hesitant as it was a new venture. This year, they are all certain, especially with the new building about to be completed.

If you though that was impressive, wait until you her about Chris Tomlinson’s other school tomorrow.

  1. The purpose of education is surely to prepare young people for the future. Schools should be helping all of our children to develop the necessary skills and qualities to thrive. Self-confidence, motivation, resilience and social kills are all essentials to be responsible citizens and make a positive contribution to society!

Alas, the powers that be don’t get this…and don’t understand that GCSEs are not the be all and end all!

It’s sooo hard when you passionately care and though I’m not a religious man, maybe I need to forgive them…for they know not what they do!

  2. Nice to see ECM pontificating, and putting a downer on the children and teachers following a year of hard work and achievement. All very well to say children should dewelope life skills to make a contribution to society, surely that is the job of parents not schools!!

  3. Perman, can’t you read? I note you can’t spell (‘dewelope’?)! The sentiments of my previous post do not put ‘a downer on the children and teachers’!

Since the 1870s with the introduction of state education, schools have been involved in more than just teaching subjects! They’re actually about teaching values and attitudes!

I agree with your comments regarding parents and the home…but kids having kids, a culture where education isn’t valued and Thurrock being the ‘worst’ place to live in the country (recent national survey), how can the trend be reversed?

Would many mums and dads from Tilbury or Ockendon win ‘parents of the year’ with regards to supporting their child’s education?

Of course it’s the parents’ job…but you try telling the Chavs in certain strongholds of the borough it’s their responsibility!

  4. Very condescending of u ECM,yes I do know how to spell develope purely a typo error.Nice to see you labelIing certain areas of the borough as Chav strongholds, care to name them ?

  5. Some people would say the two areas I mentioned in my previous post (Tilbury & Ockendon) are full of Chavs!

Certainly, a visit to the ‘Big Shops’ in Daiglen Drive is an ‘interesting’ experience!

No wonder Thurrock was voted the most miserable place to live in Britain in a recent national survey!
