THE campaign to build a community centre in Corringham dedicated to the memory of Karis May Darling takes to water at the weekend as her father John and a team of rowers aim to cross the channel.
John Darling, 43, has spent the last six months training every weekend in Hayling Island for the challenge.
John will be joined by his brothers, Karis’s uncle Dean Crampton, and other family friends.
John said: “We have been training for two months and we now have a five day window this weekend. The crossing is 22 miles as the crow flies but more like 30 when you zig-zag.”
Karis died in April 2011 and since then, the family and team has spent every hour of every day dedicated to building the centre.
So far they have raised £220,000.
The foundation are close to presenting plans to Thurrock Council. If all goes to plan, the first foundations could be laid by November.
Karis died after contracting the streptococcus A infection.
