Blue Band Guide star of West Tilbury WI

MAGGIE Piper a London Blue band guide was this month’s speaker, Maggie had been a nurse for many years until she retired and then took up the challenge to be a guide in the City of London. The subject for her talk was on the London Docklands.

Its history began with the Romans who were the first to have created a port in London. There were many to follow and it was a thriving concern for trade until the 1960’s when with the introduction of the container ships it started to decline.

These ships were so big they were unable to go into the smaller berths. The accompanying slides showed the way that regeneration began to take over and how the dock area was built on and the ensuing Docklands Light Railway and Canary Wharf that took over this area. It was a very informative and interesting talk
