Thurrock in Bloom manages to rise above the gloom

Despite a rather gloomy summer, Thurrock was a picture – as there were nearly 200 entries in this year’s Thurrock in Bloom competition.

Prizes for the 2012 competition were announced and handed out at the Thameside Theatre in Grays on Friday (28 September)

Thurrock Council’s portfolio holder for Environment, Cllr Victoria Holloway, and mayor of Thurrock, Cllr Yash Gupta, were both at the event helping hand out the prizes.

Overall winners were:

Best School Allotment Garden, West Thurrock Primary
Best Hangling Basket/Container, David Smith
Best School Hanging Basket / Container, Chadwell St Mary Primary
Best Doorstep, Brenda Cox
Best Environmental Garden, Leanda Sparling
Best School Wildlife Garden, Arthur Bugler Junior School
Young People’s Award, West Thurrock Primary

Best Senior Citizen complex, Broome Place

Outstanding contribution by a citizen, Sue Harvey of Helford Court

Cllr Gupta said afterwards: “I am very grateful to all of the volunteers who have worked hard to organise the Thurrock in Bloom Association’s presentation evening and would also like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the council officers who have worked closely in supporting the volunteers.

“Long may this wonderful work continue.”
