Football: Second league defeat in a row for Dockers

Ryman Div One North

Heybridge Swifts 4 v 2 Tilbury

TILBURY suffered a second successive league defeat against a pacey Heybridge Swifts side on Saturday. Paul Vaughan made two changes from the midweek penalty shoot out success, captain Gary Henty and Tom Wraight replacing Danny Smith and Aaron Matthews.

Tilbury started strongly and some good play from Sherwin Stanley. Midway through the half both sides had good chances, Ben Newson firing just wide for the hots before Danny Francis having his effort well saved. On 18 Tilbury took the league when Stanley played a ball through to Francis who coolly slotted home for a deserved lead. Minutes later Gary Henty fired from 25 yards and was well saved by Eyre.

On 28 Heybridge equalised when Jake Pooley slipped and the ball fell to Michael Cheek to run through to score. Towards half time both sides again had efforts, Barnett for Tilbury and Newson for Heybridge. Just before the break Heybridge took the lead when a ball from the right found Luke Callander in space to easily score. Chances continued and it was a matter of time before the next goal came. Substitute for Heybridge, Malton caused problems in the visitors defence and was denied twice by James Marrable.

With 6 minutes remaining Francis fired well and Eyre made a good save. On 87 a corner on the left found Russell Malton unmarked to tap home to increase the lead. With a minute remaining the referee adjudged that Conor Mead had handled in the box and pointed to the spot.

Cheek scored his second of the afternoon thumping down the centre of the goal. Malton again went close in injury time weaving in and out before hitting wide. Seven minutes into injury time Tilbury pulled a goal back when a corner from the right was punched in his own net but keeper Eyre after pressure from Sherwin Stanley.

Tilbury struggled in the second half after injuries to both centre half’s Pooley and Crooks who both carried on despite suffering injuries to shoulder and head.

Tilbury have a week off before welcoming Thamesmead Town to Chadfields next Saturday 3pm.
