Grays Ath go to top of the league as they beat Potters Bar

By Chris Jones

GOALS from Jack West and Harry Agombar secured a 2-0 win at previously unbeaten Potters Bar Town, and saw Blues climb to the top of the league table.

Going into the match in fourth place, and two places behind The Scholars, the team knew that a win would see them top come the end of the evening.

The manager made just one change from Saturday’s 4-1 win at home to Harlow Town, with Lee Fynn replacing Danny Bunce at left back.

Blues took the lead after just eight minutes, as Joao Carlos broke through two defenders, before Jack West collected the ball and slotted past the on-rushing goalkeeper.

Agombar made it two eight minutes later, scoring direct from a free kick on the edge of the area, after Kenny Beaney had been fouled. It was second time lucky, as the initial effort had been blocked by a defender, for which he was booked for encroachment.

Joe Sweeney suffered a knock midway through the half and was replaced by Danny Bunce, and George Kamurasi made two excellent one handed saves in the closing minutes of the first half.

The home side looked the stronger of the two sides in the opening twenty minutes of the second half, but Blues held firm.

Carlos had the best chance of a third, but he never got his shot away, and the ball was eventually cleared.

The win was Blues’ fourth consecutive league win, and takes them top from Maldon & Tiptree, who face Romford at Ship Lane on Wednesday evening.

Up next for Blues is a trip to Isthmian Premier side Whitehawk on Saturday in the FA Trophy.
