Football: Dockers denied win at the Abbey

Waltham Abbey 2 v 2 Tilbury

A late Waltham Abbey goal denied the Dockers there first win in 4 games on a brisk afternoon on thr Essex/Hertfordshire borders. Tilbury went into the game with Bradley Barnes celebrating his 100 appearance for the club.

In the opening period the home side went close after 7 minutes when Bristow effort hit Danny Smith as it was going goal bound. The resulting corner went just wide. Tilbury’s first effort of the afternoon fell on 14 when an in swinging free kick from Tom Wraight caused problems. A few minutes later following food Tilbury pressure centre half Paul King fired wide.

On 20 Tilbury took the lead when Wraight crossed and Danny Francis hit low past the keeper. It could have been 2 seconds later when Sherwin Stanley was denied by a last ditch tackle. On the half hour Tilbury continued to pressure the Waltham Abbey goal and Whincup made a fine save at the feet of Francis. Waltham abbey had a great chance on 32 when Coley fired wide from a good through ball. On 36 the home side were back in the game when Coley shot only to see his effort well saved by Marrable but fell to Bristow to blast home. Just before the break Stanley and Aiken both stabbed wide when the goal was gaping.

It was a bright opening again from both sides and on 54 Jack Stevenson long ball fell to the feet of Danny Francis who got to the ball before Whincup and rolled into an empty net. On 72 Abbey got more into the game and experienced Christian Wheeler had his effort well saved by Marrable. On 82 Tilbury could have confirmed the points when Stanley crossed and Wraight headed over from 6 yards. With only 2 minutes remaining, Tilbury did not clear the danger and the ball fell to the feet of James Peagram who fired into the roof of the net for a fine goal.

In the final seconds the referee who had a competent game, dealt with an off the ball incident well and cautioned the two offenders.

After the game Manager Paul Vaughan said ” We played well in periods, should have seen the game out, but were undone by a super strike. Waltham Abbey is a tough place to come and we have to be pleased overall with a point. We look forward to playing them again in a few weeks in the Essex Senior Cup.

Tilbury look to get back to league winning ways on Saturday when they travel to Ilford 3pm kick off.
