C2C heroes recognised following knife attack on guard last year

THREE c2c heroes have been recognised in National Rail staff awards after an incident in East Tilbury where a ticket inspector was stabbed.

The inspector was knifed by teenager, Robert Culley, on December 16 last year.

Culley, and his older brother Charles, boarded the train to Fenchurch Street without tickets.

When the inspector asked them to leave at East Tilbury, Robert Culley stabbed him in the left armpit

The inspector was taken to hospital where he required three stitches.

The brothers were caught later that weekend. Robert Culley received a four year jail sentence at Basildon Magistrates court.

The ticket inspector nominated Iain Palmer, c2c’s revenue and security manager, and Scott Walker, his assistant manager, in the National Rail Staff Awards, for the way they both supported him.

The inspector paid tribute to his colleagues:

“I was stabbed whilst carrying out my duties in December 2011 and both of my managers have been more supportive towards me than anybody else.

“They have shown compassion and support from day one, and continue to do so to this day. If it were not for Scott Walker and Iain Palmer then I would not be able to have come back to my normal role as a revenue protection inspector.

“I have had help from different organisations that have not helped me as much as my two managers have; I personally feel that they have gone above and beyond what was expected of them. I have regular meetings with them where I let them know how I am feeling and what they can do for me, and they have ALWAYS stuck by their word and acted on my requests.”

Both were shortlisted for Rail Manager of the Year.

Julie Davis, Assistant Group Station Manager – Shortlisted for both Rail Person of the Year and Rail Safety Person of the Year for her role helping c2c employees in the wake of the stabbing incident at East Tilbury in December 2011
