Hockey: Thirds hold on against Chelmsford

Chelmsford 4ths 1 v 1 Thurrock 3rds

THIS was a rather scrappy game in which neither team reached their true potential. In the early stages Thurrock dominated the game with twin-forwards Michael and Matthew Fleming linking together to force the home side into some desperate defensive work.

Eventually Thurrock made the breakthrough when Matthew drove into the D and drew the defenders towards him before slipping the ball for Michael to score from close range. Thurrock continued to have most of the play but were unable to convert their dominance into goals.

In the second half Thurrock maintained the upper hand with some promising midfield work by Jo Harvey and Mat Skinner however too often chances were wasted in the final part of the pitch allowing Chelmsford to clear the ball.

Thurrock’s inability to add to their score allowed Chelmsford to gradually gain a foothold in the game and when they were awarded a free hit on the Thurrock 25m line it was quickly taken and moved into the area to produce a shot which sneaked between the post and the diving Mark Harvey to level the score five minutes before time.
