Hockey: Six of the best from Harlow for thirds

THURROCK 3rd 0 v 6 HARLOW 2nd 6

Harlow have the largest “goals for” total in Division 7SE and Thurrock found themselves under heavy pressure from the start, however strong defensive work by Ethan Pinion, George McAllister and Declan Salmon backed up by some excellent saves from Andy Gaut held them at bay until midway through the half when a thunderous shot crept through Gaut’s legs and, despite the efforts of Matt Skinner crept over the line.

Five minutes later Harlow added a second goal from a well-taken short corner. In the final minute of the first half, Declan Salmon sustained an injury which required hospital treatment and Thurrock had to make radical adjustments to their formation with forward Dave Leeks dropping to centre back. Harlow took full advantage of the changes and attacked in force penning Thurrock into their own half.

Within five minutes a short corner was flicked into the roof of the net for the third goal and an attack down the right drew Thurrock’s defence across leaving them vulnerable to a quick switch and a shot which just evaded Gaut’s dive. Thurrock fought back and Michael Fleming came close with a shot that was deflected inches wide off a defender’ stick but chances were rare and a breakaway produced a fifth goal. Thurrock’s woes were compounded when Harlow scored from a short corner with the final hit of the match
