LOUISE Coates, Headteacher at Bonnygate Primary School in South Ockendon has been selected as a finalist for the 2013 Pearson Teaching Awards, Headteacher of the Year.
The Arisdale Avenue school’s deputy head, Gareth Jones, was on hand to meet the judges last week (wednesday, 27 February).
He said: “Mrs Coates is becoming well known for her high standards and drive for raising attainment at Bonnygate.
“This, coupled with her inspirational leadership, has seen Bonnygate Primary become an excellent educational establishment promoting the life chances for the children who come here.”
The finalists will receive the results when they are announced by the Pearson Teaching Awards on Thank a Teacher Day – 17 May.
Jo Spicer, Chair of Governors added: “The changes that have been made at Bonnygate over the last three years are testament to the hard work of the whole team, but Mrs Coates has been leading the team from the front all the way.
“The children adore her and the whole community can see how the improvement in the school has had an impact on every child.
“We’re delighted Mrs Coates’ efforts have been recognised and that she is a finalist – but we’re not all that surprised, after our super Ofsted inspection when Leadership and Management was judged as Outstanding.”
She added: “Of course we are so proud of our children too, their outstanding behaviour makes being at Bonnygate a delight!”
During the visit the judges had a chance to meet governors, parents, staff, and children as well as representatives from the local community.
Mrs Coates said: “I am honoured to be shortlisted for this amazing award. I work with such a hardworking and dedicated team of staff and the children are just brilliant – it makes my job so much easier.”
Children and staff are keeping their fingers crossed for the 17th of May.
