THE upkeep of Thurrock’s cemeteries is in the spotlight, after a Stanford councillor raised concerns.
Conservative councillor for Stanford West Shane Hebb asked a question at last week’s full council, after a complaint from a visitor who had visited a cemetery on Mother’s Day but found the site in poor condition.
Cllr Hebb said “Residents rightly expect cemeteries to be kept in good condition – they are a very solemn place where we remember our loved ones. A visitor to the Stanford cemetery recently complained to me about the condition of the site when they visited on mother’s day.
“Having asked a question about the concerns, I had to push 3 times for somebody to answer, and the response I received was simply that the appropriate director would look into the issues I raised. It is a shame the council couldn’t be more apologetic and understanding about the incident. People should be thinking more about loved ones lost, rather than the upkeep of the cemetery they are visiting”
