Football: Millers still in the play-off hunt

Ryman Div One North

Aveley 2 v 1 Waltham Forest

WITH the chasing pack gaining ground it was vital that Millers got the maximum result from this Ryman One clash and though it was a poor game, manager Justin Gardner’s players delivered.

However, it wasn’t without a worry or two as Aveley got off to the worst possible start when Joel Palmer opened the scoring for the visitors in the third minute.

Millers thought they had equalised in the tenth minute when Jordan Cox flicked on for Alex Read who tapped in from a yard out but he was adjudged to be offside.

Aveley did however equalise in the 32nd minute when a corner whipped in saw Jay Leader head in from six yards out.

And just four minutes later Aveley took the lead in the thirty sixth minute from a deflected Karl Blake free kick which crept into the bottom left hand corner for a half time lead.

The second half was to be for the most part uneventful and uninspiring but for two moments.

The first was in the 50th minute Arian Retkoceri thought he had equalised in but his effort was ruled offside.

And the second occurred when Waltham’s keeper Eric Barratt very nearly fumbled, but he regained control of the ball preventing Junior Appiah the chance for what would have been a certain goal. Unfortunately Appiah was injured in that collision with what appeared to be a leg gash and was replaced by Paul Burnett.

From there the game fizzled out and despite six minutes of injury, nothing happened.
