Cricket: Belhus storm to victory

Belhus 1st 259-4
Harold Wood 1st 133 all out

BELHUS stormed to a 126-run victory in the first round of the Essex League Cup sponsored by Dukes at North Stifford on Saturday. Central to the home team’s success was a third wicket partnership of 214 between Joe Joyce and Ryan Wells.

Joyce crashed his second century of the season with a magnificent 140 from 125 deliveries, which included twelve fours and one maximum, while Wells plundered 85 from 90 balls faced, hitting five fours and one six. Yet it was Harold Wood who made early inroads as they removed both Belhus openers relatively cheaply with only 45 runs on the board. Michael Fogg was caught by Peter Clarke off the bowling of Hamza Ikram (2-67) without score, while Gavin Jefferies became Ikram’s second and final victim courtesy of a catch behind by Colin Sher for 23. Shahbaz Khan (2-43) eventually picked up the wickets of Joyce and Wells after which there was no further addition to the Belhus total.

After tea, Wood lost wickets at regular intervals, but Raihan Hussain and Khan produced a 58-run third wicket partnership which was ended when Jefferies (3-21) had Khan trapped leg before for 20 while Hussain was bowled by Jefferies nine runs later for 41. The tail wagged as number eleven batsman Haroon Ikram produced a meritable 17 runs until he was caught by Richard Day off the bowling of Joyce (1-3 from 1.5 overs), while Billy Mortimer defended resolutely to keep the innings alive with a defiant nine not out from 39 deliveries. Jefferies’ main support in the bowling stakes came from opener Dale Kenyon, 2-29 from eight overs, skipper Danny Joyce claimed 2-19 from six overs while Mathew Lewis junior picked up 1-31, also from six overs.

Umpires: Jim Medlycott and Iftikhar Bukhari.
Scorers: Patricia Stephenson and George Jones.

Belhus will now meet Hainault and Clayhall on Saturday (4th May) in the second round of the Dukes League Cup. The match will be played at North Stifford, starting at 1pm.
