Karate: Melissa starring at the dojo

By Cheri Stokes

Congratulations goes to the Phoenix Karate Squad who have been very successful over the last two competitions. Phoenix Karate Club has two Dojo’s one in the Basildon Sporting Village and the other at Phoenix Dojo Northwick Road, Charfleets on Canvey.

And so we have competitors and teams from both dojo’s competing for Phoenix. In the last two competitions the majority of the competitors came from Canvey Island. I am hoping that in the future events more of the Basildon Karateka will follow in Melissa King’s footsteps. Mel is a 12 year old young lady who only recently started karate at Phoenix and who has come on so well and is now training with much older people due to her ability. Mel came second in her category in Kata and we are looking for her to start competing in Kumite shortly which I am sure she will do well.

I remember when I first started karate at 12 years old and the opportunities it gave me competition around the world and the confidence it gave me.

The rest of the Phoenix team live and train on Canvey Dojo. Well Done Lee Dolby who started training after his daughter Chelsy started karate at Phoenix and he got bored watching. Lee has WON both competitions he has entered in Kata so far and so his standard is very good indeed. Chelsy also achieved a credited 3rd in her Kata Category a great Karate family in the making. Congratulations also to Piau Maprangon, Brogen Flathery and Dennis Gleadell all winning their events as teenagers. Piau later teamed up with her brother Mia and with Brogen were placed a credited Third in team kata.

Riley Bryant upon entering his first Kumite competition was awarded a 3rd place. Not forgetting the Karate Ladies Karen Daykin, Sonia Corbyn and Haley Marney all who train on Monday nights at 7pm Ladies self defence class were all placed second and third places in both kata and kumite events. Finally young 7 year old Fletcher Moore who entered his first proper competition and came away with the Gold Medal.

If you would like to train with Phoenix Karate Club then please visit facebook/phoenixkarateclub or ring 01268 681927 for details as there are classes 7 days a week. 3 ½ years old until 77 years old there is a class for you.
