THE SUCCESS of the South Ockendon Centre hub is likely to be replicated around the borough in months and years to come.

Portfolio holder Cllr Lynn Worrall told Wednesday (10 July) evening’s meeting of Thurrock Council’s cabinet that nine communities had expressed an interest in working towards having a new hub and letters will be going out in the next week to start the work over the summer

She said: “Cabinet papers do not always reflect the excitement behind an initiative, but I can assure you that the South Ockendon Centre and plans to roll out hubs are very exciting opportunities.

“It’s quite hard to keep up with the good news coming from Ockendon, but some of the stories are very touching and definitely cause goose bumps as they are told.

“Over 30 volunteers are actively involved and they have helped with over 3,000 enquiries since opening just three months ago.

“The added value that someone receives from knowing a volunteer has chosen to give their time to help give advice or provide information is very powerful. I have heard of at least two happy customers coming back with cakes as thank-yous! “

She said that others had been so impressed by the help they received that they have come in to volunteer too.

Cllr Worrall added: “The hubs programme is truly transforming how residents access and experience services.

“We are at the early stages of understanding how that impacts on savings in other services – but we know it reduces contact with paid staff and helps issues to be resolved quicker and more effectively than traditional routes.

“Over the last few months I have been bowled over by the enthusiasm of forums coming forward to talk about hosting hubs in their area.”

She said the item set out opportunities and a starting point for more detailed work with forums, local networks and councillors – learning from the Ockendon experience.

“In the next few weeks working groups will be established in key areas to co-plan; co-design and co-deliver hubs in a joint partnership with CVS, forums and communities,” she added.

  1. Before everyone gets carried away, lets hope TC learn from all the mistakes made at the Belhus Hub.
The Library now appears to be a second thought, even long serving staff have resigned.
People are finding it difficult to concentrate because of all the noise from the “hubbub”.
Not enough tables and chairs and inferior lighting.
    Reduced car parking.
Community groups need to be more closely consulted about the design and priorities before the next hub is commenced please.
