A SENIOR Thurrock Conservative quizzed the ruling Labour group on why negotiations over the State Cinema are such a closely guarded secret.

Deputy leader of the Thurrock Conservatives, Cllr Rob Gledhill put the question to regeneration boss, cllr Andy Smith at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday night (July 10th).

Cllr Gledhill noted that items regarding the sale of the Culver Centre and other matters were not to be held in secret but the item discussing the State Cinema would.

Cllr Geldhill also questioned the “significant” involvement that Cllr Smith decided to have in the negotiations and contrasted it with the the development of Purfleet item on the agenda.

Cllr Smith told the deputy leader of the Conservatives that the item was to be “exempt” as to the sensitive nature of the negotiations.

The discussion of items in “exempt” conditions was a common feature during the Tory administration. This is the first time since Labour took in May 2010, that it has been used.

  1. The Cabinet agendas are available on the council website.

Before this report in 2013, there were exempt reports in March, February (4) and January (3).

In the last few months of the Tory administration, there were exempt reports in March, February, and January (4).

I am not sure your comparison holds water.

  2. the current owners paid £500000 for it. from Morrisons who sold us out. Dont pay a penny more for it. If you do. it will be a MASSIVE unforgivable waste of Thurrock tax payers money.
