Football: Grays bake Briggs in pre-season opener

Grays Ath 1 – 0 Brigg Town (Friendly)

By Chris Jones

BLUES started their pre-season campaign in searing heat at Rush Green against Lincolnshire side Brigg Town, recording a hard-fought 1 – 0 win.

The match started with a familiar eleven, with Ryan Maxwell the only player not to have ended last season with the club.

The visitors had a good chance in the first minute, only to see the ball go wide of Kamurasi’s left hand post, to be their best effort before the home side started to dominate possession.

Nathan Gordon looked impressive down the right wing, especially so considering the injury he is returning from, and Jeff Hammond created havoc up front alongside Jared Small.

Hammond had numerous efforts saved by the visiting keeper, and on the one occasion he did get the ball in the back of the net, it was ruled offside by the linesman on the near side.

New manager Ryan Kirby made four changes at the break with Lee Flynn, Hammond, Small and Gordon being replaced by four new faces.

One of those, Paul Scott scored the only goal of the game, heading home from a corner just before the hour mark.

The triallist has had a number of spells at Whyteleafe, and looked impressive in his 45 minutes.

Aaron Gonzales, Dan Day and Usama Hamdan were also introduced at half time, and they were joined by Dan Fry and Brian Moses midway through the second period.

Kenny Beaney carried on from where he ended last season, running things in the middle of the park, but for me, it was excellent to see Nathan Gordon back in a Blues shirt. If he manages to recapture some of the form shown during the second half of the 2011/12 season, he could well be one of the most important signings of the summer.

Brigg are staying over this evening and are off to see the sights, hopefully of London rather than Romford, and are set to face a Grays Ath XI at The Academy on Sunday afternoon.

Starting XI
George Kamurasi, Craig Pope, David East, Junior Baker, Lee Flynn, Nathan Gordon, Kenny Beaney, Ryan Maxwell, Joao Carlos, Jared Small, Jeff Hammond
