Butts Lane development: “Trying to secure the best deal possible for local residents.”

CONTROVERSIAL plans for a major development in Butts Lane, Stanford-le-Hope, were finally approved the Thurrock Council’s planning committee last week.

Conservative councillor for Stanford West, Shane Hebb said “Many local residents, including myself, did not approve of plans to develop the Butts Lane site, and would still prefer to maintain the local scene as it is today. But sometimes decisions are made that you disagree with, and that’s what happened in this instance; It’s been a case of trying to secure the best deal possible for local residents.”

The plans were originally granted outline permission in 2012, after a lengthy battle by residents and a public inquiry. The plans agreed this week were the final, detailed proposals, with Barratts indicating that work will now commence by Summer 2014.

“We have scrutinised every detail to the last”, says Cllr Hebb. “Credit where it is due, Barratts have taken feedback on board from local residents, our local forum, and myself. As a result a number of concessions have been made, most latterly a ‘best of both worlds’ solution in respects of headlight glare; more established greenery in between the new development and the existing Oxford Close properties, and car parking provision at the community hall”.

“It may not have been our first choice of what to do with the St Clare’s Golf Course, but through intense scrutiny and sheer tenacity, residents have secured a future which permits a credible development, all the while having secured safeguards in the local amenity and local infrastructure.”
