Hockey: Threadbare Thurrock hang on for draw

Saffron Walden 2XI 3  v 3 Thurrock 1XI

THURROCK turned up to Saffron Walden with a depleted side in the hope they weren’t goin to get run over by a well drilled home side.

A couple of debut performances to mention with Ethan Pinion making his first start at right back and Gary O’Donohue swapping the pads for a striker role.

The game started perfectly for the away side when Gary’s bullet ahem scuffed ahem shot missed the home keepers kicker to make it 0-1 to Thurrock.

Unfortunately the home side managed to pull it back to 1-1 with a good shot from the right of the D to bottom left of the goal.

Towards the end of the 1st half, the donkey moment of the game appeared when an average short corner drag from the home side squeezed its way through the keeper Gaut’s limp wristed hand pad.

2-1 at half time and Thurrock were no way being trampled on.

Thurrock then had their own short corner luck when the home side keeper couldn’t stop a venomous strike from Nick Stapleton and the ball dribbled over the line to make it 2-2.

A good brake from Saffron Walden made it 3-2 With a neat finish to the keeper’s right.

With about 10 minutes to go, Nick slotted home a well drilled short corner straight from the training ground albeit without the final touch from Declan Millane to bag himself a brace.

Unfortunately the game ended on a sour note when the Thurrock captain Jak Taylor stopped a strike with his ear and went down like a sack of potatoes maybe with a girly scream or two.

A couple of performances to note…Mike Hewing was a demon at the back stopping everything that came his way, Ethan playin like a seasoned pro at right back and everyone else for giving their all.
