Football: Fleet not too shabby against Abbey

Ryman League North

Thurrock 2 v 0 Waltham Abbey

Bill Robinson reports from Ship Lane…..

A FINE solid performance from a Thurrock team that fully deserved all three points to maintain their play off position.
Although Thurrock didn’t dominate the first forty five minutes they were good for the 1-0 advantage when they went in at the break.

With a little more luck they could have had more just minutes before the opening goal, on 35mins Brad Warner was put through with a lofted cross that split the defence but his volley went inches over the bar.

Only three minutes later Ross Wall should have scored when he was put through and was one on one with the keeper and he tried to lift the ball over the keeper only to see his effort miss the target.

Eventually Thurrock found the back of the net when David Knight pounced onto a poor back pass from the Waltham centre back, he beat the keeper in a tackle and slotted home the ball into the vacant net.

The second half was more end to end as Waltham Abbey pushed forward looking to get back into the game, they found gaps in the Thurrock defence and if their shooting was more accurate and thanks to keeper Andy Walker who pulled off two fine saves Thurrock maintained their advantage.

We had to wait until the last minutes of the game for the win to be sealed when David Knight and Luke Stanley had possession wide on the right, Luke Stanley put the ball through to David Knight who went on a twisting run through the Waltham penalty box before firing a left footed shot into the corner of the net.
